Georgia Bulldogs 2014 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

2014-15 Football Previews – (SEC) – Bulldogs

Similar to the 2014 South Carolina team, Georgia is in a situation where its starting QB for 2014 has been caddying for the past three years, patiently awaiting his chance for the spotlight.

And similar to the Gamecocks – though in an even more pronounced way for the Bulldogs – the rest of the team is so darn good, you can still expect big things from them this season.

As you could expect from a team that went 8-5, all was not perfect last season. The Bulldogs’ defense got torched badly in 2013, but new defensive co-ordinator Jeremy Pruitt – poached from superpower Florida State – should be able to coach them up nicely.

Veteran head coach Mark Richt is not worried about his starting pivot, as senior Hutson Mason got to start the last two games of the 2013 season after an injury to departed school legend Aaron Murray.

Mason has a horde of weapons to work with on offense and hopes are high in Athens. Let’s look at the strengths and weaknesses of the 2014 Georgia Bulldogs.

Team Strengths

The Dawgs have a murderous early-season schedule, travelling to Clemson in their first game and hosting South Carolina in Week 2. It showed great foresight to start Mason at the end of last season, to get some of the kinks out of the way and ensure he can hit the ground running this year.

There’ll be plenty of running, too, with juniors Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall available at tailback. Gurley is a 6″1, 232-lb beast who has a promising NFL future ahead of him. With the possible exception of Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon, Gurley is the SEC’s premier back. What’s even crazier is he’s backed up by Marshall, who would also be among the conference’s elite (though he is coming off an ACL tear).

The receivers are good, and they’re made better with gifted junior Malcolm Mitchell coming back from a knee injury. Though there will be three new faces on the O-line, years of good recruiting means there is talent emerging, such as LT John Theus and OG Greg Pyke.

Though Georgia is a work in progress defensively, it’s a good sign that every starter save one from last year returns. That coupled with the presence of Pruitt could turn a weakness into a strength. The improvement should emanate from the LB corps, with stud Ramik Wilson and promising Leonard Floyd in the thick of it.

Team Weaknesses

Mason has been incredibly well-groomed for his opportunity, but he’s still no Aaron Murray, who re-wrote the record books at Georgia (saying a lot, considering David Greene and Eric Zeier played there).

While there are a couple of talented players on the O-line, there can always be some growing pains when you’re breaking in new starters. Eyes will be on OG Brandon Kublanow and OT Kolton Houston.

There’s lots of optimism with the new defensive co-ordinator, but you can’t escape the facts: Georgia gave up a school record for points last season and the most yards per game of the Richt era (375.5 per). That must change quickly if the Dawgs have aspirations of earning the SEC East crown.

The biggest worries come from the defensive secondary. Talented safety Josh Harvey-Clemons got booted off the team for off-the-field transgressions, and it doesn’t leave much experience or ability back there. Yet, coaches are intrigued with walk-on CB Aaron Davis, who’s shown smarts and toughness. Senior CB Damien Swann must make a leap.

Kicker Marshall Morgan is awesome, but the rest of Georgia’s special teams unit needs to get its act together; it’s why the Bulldogs brought in a new special teams coach in Mike Ekeler.

2014-15 Georgia Football Prediction: 11-2

Just when you think Richt’s teams are about to fade into obscurity, they reload and assert themselves back in the national discussion. There’s a reason why he’s going into his 14th year wearing the headset.

The Bulldogs are not perfect, but neither is any other team in the SEC East. Their running game should be downright overwhelming and Mason has plenty of options to work with, both aerially and in the ground game. It was a smart decision for Mason to voluntarily redshirt so he could have this year running Georgia’s offense as a fifth-year senior.

If the defense improves like proven miracle-worker Pruitt says it’s going to, look out for those Dawgs.
